Assessing neodymium isotopes as an ocean circulation tracer in the Southwest Atlantic

چکیده

The global overturning ocean circulation plays a key role in climate by distributing heat around the Earth and triggering or amplifying major changes. Neodymium (Nd) isotopes are widely used to trace present-day past changes; however, their value as tracer has been increasingly challenged studies that have focused on processes can modify seawater Nd isotope ratios (for example, interaction with particles, pore water fluxes from sediments). Southwest Atlantic represents an excellent test bed for investigating integrity of tracer, it includes northern southern hemisphere-sourced end-member masses associated circulation, Antarctic Intermediate Water, North Deep Bottom Water (AAIW, NADW, AABW, respectively) potential regional sources could impact integrity. This study reports data GEOTRACES GA02 Meridional Transect, spanning equator ∼50°S. Below pycnocline, substantial non-conservative behavior is observed only samples dominated AAIW portion transect (∼25°S equator); this appears reflect addition cratons South America Africa above pycnocline. effect not at depths directly below NADW. Otherwise, behave near-conservative mass along transect, 48% within analytical error predicted mixing, 84% 0.9 εNd-units (∼3 times error), thus confirming its most locations reconstruct

Thorium-234 as a tracer of particle dynamics and upper ocean export in the Atlantic Ocean

The flux of sinking particles is an important removal mechanism of carbon and other chemical species from the surface ocean as part of the biological pump. Euphotic zone export of Th was measured on GEOTRACES transects of the Atlantic Ocean to evaluate basin-scale export variability. High-resolution sampling through the entire water-column allowed for the identification of unique Th features in...

North Atlantic surface-ocean control of Pleistocene deep-ocean circulation

Deep basins of the North Atlantic were occupied by a cold 13 C-depleted (nutrient-rich) water mass during glaciations, and a warmer 13C-enriched (nutrient-poor) water mass (modern NADW) during interglaciations. This mode of deep-water variability is related directly to migration of the North Atlantic Polar Front. Down-core stable isotope records from the Atlantic and Antarctic suggest that 13C ...

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slowdown cooled the subtropical ocean

[1] Observations show that the upper 2 km of the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean cooled throughout 2010 and remained cold until at least December 2011. We show that these cold anomalies are partly driven by anomalous air-sea exchange during the cold winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 and, more surprisingly, by extreme interannual variability in the ocean's northward heat transport at 26.5°N. T...
